About Geography Quiz Lab

Geography Quiz Lab is a small independent studio that makes geography quizzes and printable maps. You can click countries on a map, type their names, pick from four, study in Learn mode or race a 60-second round, and there are flag and capitals quizzes alongside. Everything is free to use in the browser and free to print for personal and classroom use, and there are no accounts to create.

We built it for adults who want the world map in their heads: trivia players, travellers, people topping up what they learned at school, and teachers who need a quiz or a blank map for tomorrow's lesson. The aim is simple. Every name, capital, flag and border on the site should be right, and it should be clear where it came from.

Where the data comes from

The country boundaries are drawn from Natural Earth, which is in the public domain. Country names and capitals come from the final edition of the CIA World Factbook, also public domain, and each one is cross-checked against Wikidata and Natural Earth. US state capitals are checked against two independent sources. Flags come from the open-source flag-icons project under the MIT license, and each flag is compared with the reference file on Wikimedia Commons before it is used.

When sources disagree, we look into it and record the decision rather than quietly picking one. The full list, with licenses, is on the sources page.

What counts as a country

A world quiz needs a fixed list, so ours is the 193 UN member states plus the 2 UN observer states, Vatican City and Palestine. Taiwan, Kosovo, Western Sahara, Greenland and Puerto Rico are available as an optional other territories setting, off by default. Names are the current official ones, so you will find Kyiv, Eswatini and Türkiye. Disputed borders and capitals are handled the same way on every page, and the reasoning is set out in our borders and names policy.

Quizzes first, printables beside them

Every quiz page puts the map at the top so you can start straight away. Below it is the full list of places in the set, with capitals and flags, so you can study before you play. Your best times and settings are kept in your own browser, not on our servers.

For paper, each region has a blank map, an outline map, a numbered map with an answer key and a labelled map, in PNG and PDF. Worksheets come with answer keys too. Start with the map quizzes, the printable maps or the geography worksheets.

Mistakes and suggestions

Borders move, countries rename their capitals, and we can get things wrong. Every quiz has a report a mistake link that opens an email to us, and corrections are logged so you can see what changed. Suggestions for new regions, quiz types or printables are welcome through the contact page. If something makes the site harder to use, our accessibility page explains what we have done so far and what is still on the list.
